Reusing Disposable Dust Masks – What You Need to Know
It may come as a surprise, but some disposable dust masks can be used longer than an eight hour shift. These masks are usually marked with “R” (Reusable) on the packaging and the mask itself. The product instructions should be referred to, allowing you to understand the period of suggested use.
If a mask is marked “NR” (Not Reusable), it means the mask is to used used no longer than an 8 hour shift.
Ensure to keep the inside of the mask clean and free from contamination. If dust or hazardous material enters the inside the mask, it could pose a risk the next time it's worn.
In reality, it is often difficult to keep a disposable mask clean enough for safe reuse, especially in messy or hazardous environments. For this reason, many workers choose to identify all disposable masks as single-use, even if they are marked as reusable.
Disposable dust masks are also known as FFP (filtering facepiece)
