What Type of Eye Protection Should I Use When Working with Chemicals?

Choosing the Right Safety Goggles or Face Shield for Chemical Handling

When working with chemicals, it’s vital to select the correct type of eye and face protection to guard against splashes, droplets, and other liquid hazards.

Under EN 166, goggles and face shields intended for chemical use are marked with the code ‘3’:

A ‘3’ marking on goggles indicates protection against liquid droplets – ideal for tasks like spraying.

A ‘3’ marking on face shields indicates protection against liquid splash – suitable for pouring liquids.

For the highest level of safety, especially during high-risk tasks, it's recommended to wear both goggles and a face shield. This combination offers:

Sealed eye protection from the goggles

Full facial coverage from the face shield

However, it’s important to be aware that eye and face protectors are not resistant to prolonged or repeated contact with all chemicals. If the lens material becomes damaged, discoloured, or brittle after exposure to a substance, it must be replaced immediately.

Lens materials such as polycarbonate, acetate, and co-polyester each respond differently to various chemical hazards. To identify the best option for your specific application, please contact our Technical Department.

Summary of key points:

  • Use goggles marked ‘3’ for protection against liquid droplets.
  • Use face shields marked ‘3’ for protection against liquid splashes.
  • For higher-risk tasks, combine goggles and a face shield.
  • Inspect PPE regularly – do not use if the lens shows signs of damage, discolouration, or brittleness.
  • Lens material selection depends on the chemical – consult JSP Technical for advice.
