What is the INDG479 document?

Understanding the guidance on RPE fit testing from the HSE

The INDG 479 is an official document offering Fit Testing guidance, published by BSIF (British Safety industry Federation) working alongside the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The suite of documents are known as Fit2Fit Companions. These outline procedures for fit testing respiratory protective equipment (RPE). The guidance is essential for employers, safety managers, and anyone responsible, ensuring that RPE provides adequate protection in the workplace.

The INDG 479 replaces and supersedes the previous guidance document HSE OC282/28, which was titled Fit Testing of Respiratory Protective Equipment Face Pieces. The new document presents updated and clearer instructions in a more accessible format, aimed at improving understanding and compliance with legal requirements.

INDG479 explains:

  • Why fit testing is needed for tight-fitting RPE
  • Who should carry out fit testing
  • When fit testing should be done
  • Types of fit testing methods (qualitative and quantitative)
  • The importance of regular re-testing and record-keeping
  • This guidance ensures that users are adequately protected by their RPE and helps duty holders meet their legal obligations under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002.
