Fit testing must be conducted before a tight-fitting respirator is used in any hazardous environment. Ideally, this should take place at the initial selection stage. If a mask has not yet been tested, or if an operative has not undergone a fit test while using tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment (RPE), a fit test must be carried out immediately.

Ongoing fit testing should also be scheduled at regular intervals. These intervals should be defined by the company health & safety policy and informed by a risk assessment. Additional fit tests should be carried out if:

• the wearer gains or loses a significant amount of weight,
• the wearer has major dental work, facial surgery, or sustains a facial injury,
• there is any change in the type or size of the respirator used.
