Everyone’s face is different in shape, size and proportions, so a single type or size of respirator will not fit everyone. To ensure proper protection, it’s essential to try different models and sizes to find one that fits well. Several other factors can affect the fit of tight-fitting Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE):
- Facial hair – Anyone wearing tight-fitting RPE must be clean-shaven in areas where the respirator makes contact with the face. Facial hair can interfere with the seal and reduce the effectiveness of the protection.
- Eyewear and other PPE – Items such as prescription glasses, safety goggles or helmets may disrupt the fit of a respirator. All such items should be worn during a fit test to ensure compatibility with the respirator.
- Jewellery and make-up – Any jewellery or make-up that comes into contact with the area where the respirator seals should be removed. These can prevent a secure fit and compromise the seal.
Key points:
- Facial features vary, so fit testing with various respirator types and sizes is essential to identify the correct fit.
- Tight-fitting RPE requires the wearer to be clean-shaven where the respirator seal touches the face.
- Spectacles and other PPE must be worn during the fit test to ensure they do not interfere with the respirator seal.
- Remove any jewellery or make-up in contact with the respirator seal area before use or fit testing.
