How do I fit a height safety harness?

tep-by-step instructions to ensure your safety harness is worn properly and securely

Fitting a height safety harness correctly is essential for ensuring maximum protection when working at height. A poorly fitted harness can compromise safety and lead to serious injury in the event of a fall. Follow the steps below to fit your harness properly:

  1. Inspect the harness before use
Before putting it on, check the harness for any signs of damage, fraying, cuts, broken stitching or corrosion. Ensure all buckles and D-rings are secure and functioning correctly. Do not use a damaged harness.

  2. Hold the harness by the dorsal (rear) D-ring
Pick the harness up by the D-ring located at the back. This helps the straps fall into place and makes it easier to identify the front and back.

  3. Untangle the straps
Make sure all straps are untangled and hanging freely. Lay the harness out if needed to straighten it fully.

  4. Put on the shoulder straps
Slip your arms through the shoulder straps as if putting on a jacket. The D-ring should sit in the middle of your upper back, between your shoulder blades.

  5. Connect the chest strap
Buckle the chest strap across your chest and adjust it so it sits comfortably at mid-chest level. It should be snug but not restrictive.

  6. Secure the leg straps
Reach between your legs and connect the leg straps to the corresponding buckles. Adjust them so they are secure but not tight enough to restrict movement or circulation.

  7. Adjust the straps for a snug fit
Adjust all straps – including shoulder, chest, and leg – so the harness fits closely to your body. It should not be loose or baggy. The harness should allow for freedom of movement without compromising safety.

  8. Final checks
  • Ensure the D-ring sits correctly between your shoulder blades.
  • Make sure straps are flat against your body with no twists.
  • Perform a “fit check” by trying to slide a flat hand under each strap – it should be a tight fit.
  • If available, ask a colleague to perform a buddy check.

Key points:

  • Always inspect your harness before each use.
  • Ensure the D-ring is centred on your back between the shoulder blades.
  • All straps should be untangled and lie flat against the body.
  • Chest and leg straps must be secure and properly adjusted.
  • Perform a full fit check before starting work.
