Self-retractable lifelines are equipped with a self-locking function and automatic tensioning, similar to a car seatbelt. These devices require a maximum of 400mm to activate and stop the fall.
They are particularly useful in areas with limited fall space, which is a common restriction when using fall arrest lanyards. Self-retractable lifelines allow for a shorter free fall and arrest distance, reducing the overall fall clearance required.
To calculate the overall required clearance, you must consider the following:
Free fall distance
Brake operation
Harness stretch
An additional 1 metre recommended for all fall arrest systems
If the self-retractable lifeline includes a shock absorber, the length of the deployed shock absorber should also be taken into account when calculating the clearance needed.
