Why should I inspect my height safety equipment?

Understanding the Importance of Regular Inspections and Who Can Perform Them

Regular inspection of height safety equipment is essential to ensure it remains in safe working condition. These inspections help identify wear, damage, or faults that could compromise the equipment's ability to prevent falls, ensuring continued protection for the user. Without proper inspection, equipment failure could result in serious injury or even fatality.

The EN 365:2004 standard specifies that a detailed inspection or periodic examination of fall protection equipment must be carried out at least once every 12 months. This must be performed by a “competent person”, someone qualified to inspect the equipment in compliance with safety regulations.

A competent person is someone who possesses:

Sufficient professional or technical training to understand the equipment and its requirements.

Relevant knowledge of the equipment's functions, safety standards, and regulations.

Authority and impartiality to make unbiased decisions about the equipment’s safety.

Practical experience in carrying out inspections and identifying potential issues.

The ability to carry out assigned duties responsibly and at the correct level of expertise.

While users can perform basic visual checks on the equipment, a more detailed inspection should be conducted by a qualified competent person as outlined in the standard.

Difference Between Visual Inspection and Servicing

Visual Inspection: This is a basic, non-invasive check of the equipment. It is generally performed by the user and involves looking for visible signs of wear, damage, or malfunction. This inspection can often be done before each use to ensure immediate safety.

Servicing: Servicing is more comprehensive and involves dismantling the product and replacing any worn-out or damaged components as required. Servicing can only be carried out by a trained and authorised service agent to ensure that all parts are functioning correctly and the equipment is fully safe to use.

Key points:

Regular inspections of height safety equipment are essential for ongoing safety.

Detailed inspections must be carried out at least once every 12 months, as per EN 365:2004.

Inspections should be performed by a competent person with the right qualifications and experience.

Visual inspections can be done by the user, but a competent person must carry out detailed inspections.

Servicing involves dismantling and replacing components and must be performed by an authorised and trained service agent.
