Fit Testing Guidance INDG 479 was raised by the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) working alongside UK HSE. The suite of documents recommends that Fit Testing should be carried out every two years. However more frequent repeat Fit Testing may be appropriate particularly where RPE is being used as a primary or sole means of control. The 2 year interval is a guide. Workplaces with high risk levels are encouraged to adopt more frequent testing. For example: high risk environments, health care - those associated with aerosol generating procedure or airborne pathogens, asbestos / hazardous substance removal etc. More frequent Fit Testing will maintain an additional layer of safety assurance.
The employers health and safety policy should dictate the frequency of Fit Testing.
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (CoSHH) along with Approved Code of Practice (ACoP) requires that fit testing is conducted by a competent person.
JSP Limited continues to recommend that Fit Testing is carried out annually. This more frequent testing helps to account for any changes in facial features, weight, or equipment use that may affect the fit of a mask. Annual testing offers a higher level of assurance to the employer and their employees.
