What Does the Assigned Protection Factor (APF) of a Respirator Mean?

Understanding How APF Helps Select the Right Respiratory Protection

The Assigned Protection Factor (APF) indicates the level of respiratory protection a properly fitted and correctly used respirator can be expected to provide in the workplace. This includes all types of respirators, such as disposable masks.

APF differs from the Nominal Protection Factor (NPF), which is a theoretical value derived from standardised laboratory testing. While NPF represents the maximum potential performance of the respirator, APF reflects realistic workplace performance, considering variables like correct fitting and consistent use.

When determining which respirator to use, the Required Protection Factor (RPF) should first be calculated based on the known hazards and their concentrations in the environment. The selected respirator must have an APF that meets or exceeds this RPF.

It's important to note that APF values may vary between countries, depending on local regulations and standards. Some regulatory bodies convert Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) into the closest applicable APF to guide appropriate selection of respiratory protective equipment.
