Can I Wear My Normal Safety Spectacles When Working on Live Electrical Installations?

Understanding Eye Protection Requirements for Electrical Arc Risk

When working on an old or live electrical installation, there is a risk of arcing, which can cause intense heat, light, and flying debris. In such situations, standard safety spectacles are not sufficient and do not provide the necessary level of protection.

To protect against arc flash, you must wear a specialised visor that meets specific requirements:

The visor must be at least 1.4mm thick.

It should be marked with “2C-1.2”, indicating correct optical and UV filtering.

It must also include the marking “8”, which signifies protection against short circuit electric arc under the EN 166 and EN 170 standards.

Normal safety spectacles do not offer protection against electrical arcs and should not be used for live electrical work.

Summary of key points:

  • Live electrical work carries a risk of arcing.
  • Standard safety spectacles do not offer suitable protection.
  • A compliant visor must be:
  • At least 1.4mm thick,
  • Marked “2C-1.2”,
  • Include an “8” marking for arc protection.
