Can I Wear Safety Spectacles When Using a Staple Gun at 100m/s?

Choosing the Correct Eye and Face Protection for Medium Energy Impact Hazards

If you are using a staple gun with a firing speed of 100 m/s, standard safety spectacles are not suitable. According to EN 166, protection at this speed falls under the category of Medium Energy Impact, which is rated as Grade B.

For this level of protection, you must use either:

Goggles marked with EN 166 B, or

A face shield that is also rated EN 166 B

While goggles rated to Grade B will provide sufficient eye protection, using a face shield to the same standard offers greater coverage, protecting your entire face. Some face shields can also be fitted with a chin guard for additional protection against high-speed projectiles or ricochets.

Safety spectacles cannot be certified to Grade B, as they are only rated for Low Energy Impact (Grade F) and are therefore not appropriate for staple gun use at this speed.

Summary of key points:

  • A staple gun firing at 100 m/s requires EN 166 B (Medium Energy) protection.
  • Standard safety spectacles are not suitable – they only meet Grade F.
  • Use goggles or preferably a face shield, both marked EN 166 B.
  • A face shield with an optional chin guard provides the most comprehensive protection.
