The purpose of Fit Testing is to identify that a specific make, model, size of a tight-fitting respirator (face-piece) matches the wearers facial features and seals adequately to the wearers face and provides the intended level of protection. People faces vary significantly in shape and size so it will be unlikely that one particular model or size of respirator will fit everyone. Therefore, it’s important to ensure the selected respirator fits the individual properly.
A fit test is a simple pass/fail assessment carried out by a trained and competent person. It ensures that the respirator forms an adequate seal around the wearer’s face and is suitable for their specific facial features.
Key points:
- Fit testing ensures a respirator provides the level of protection it was designed for.
- Everyone has a different face shape and size—correct fit must be without concern to leakage.
- Fit testing gives a pass or fail result.
- The test must be carried out by a trained and competent individual.
