What is Category III PPE?

Understanding the classification for high-risk personal protective equipment

Category III Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) refers to equipment designed to protect users against the most serious health and safety risks. According to the PPE Regulation, Category III "includes exclusively the risks that may cause very serious consequences such as death or irreversible damage to health."

This classification ensures that PPE in this category undergoes the most stringent conformity assessments. These products must be tested and approved by a Notified Body and are subject to ongoing surveillance, including annual audits and product testing, to maintain compliance.

Examples of risks covered by Category III PPE include:

  • Harmful noise
  • Exposure to harmful substances
  • Electric shock
  • Extreme temperatures
  • Falls from height

Due to harmful noise now being rated as a Category III risk, selecting the correct hearing protection has never been more critical. PPE chosen for such hazards must meet rigorous safety standards and be suited to the specific environment in which it is used.

Key points:

  • Category III PPE is for high-risk hazards that could cause death or irreversible harm.
  • PPE must pass stringent testing and ongoing surveillance.
  • Harmful noise is now classified as a Category III risk.
  • Choosing the right hearing protection is essential in such environments.
  • Only compliant products that meet regulation requirements should be used.
