Fit testing should not be considered a one-time process. It must be continually reviewed to ensure the effectiveness of Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) in the workplace. The employer has the responsibility to determine the frequency of Fit Testing.
Fit testing should be conducted by a competent person. Competence can be demonstrated by attending the Fit2Fit RPE Fit Test Providers certification / qualification Scheme. This scheme has been developed by the BSIF, together with industry stakeholders, and is supported by HSE. The scheme is not compulsory and employers are free to take other action to comply with the law. Further details on the scheme can be found at www.fit2fit.org
There are several reasons why fit testing should be repeated, including:
Significant dental work that alters facial structure
Noticeable weight gain or loss
Facial scarring or disfigurement caused by accidents
Facial surgery that changes shape or contour
Switching to a different make or model of face mask
Changes to facial features or equipment can affect how well the RPE seals against the face. An ineffective seal may reduce the level of protection provided to the wearer.
In addition, certain face shapes — such as irregularly shaped temples, prominent cheekbones, or angular jawlines — may not conform well to certain mask designs. This further highlights the importance of ensuring that RPE is correctly sized, fitted, and donned to achieve a reliable seal.
Key points:
- Fit testing should be reviewed whenever significant changes to the face occur
- Significant weight gain or loss, facial surgery along with significant dental work can affect the mask fit
- A new model or make of mask (untested face-pieces) will requires a new fit test
- Facial structure may affect how well a mask seals
- Properly sized and fitted RPE ensures maximum protection
