When Should Fit Testing Be Reviewed?

Key reasons to reassess face fit testing for Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE)

Fit testing should not be seen as a one-time procedure. It must be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to ensure ongoing protection remains.  Changes to the wearer’s face or the respirator itself can affect the effectiveness of the face-seal and, ultimately, the level of protection provided. Additionally, pay close attention to face shapes and features such as angular faces, high cheekbones, cleft chins, moles, scars, as these may impede the respirator face seal and influence the performance and protection of the respirator.

A correctly sized respirator and functional respirator will deliver confident seal around the face. Fit Testing will confirm the mask is without leakage.

Fit Test should be undertaken and reviewed if any of the following apply:

  • Significant dental work has altered facial form and structure
  • Noticeable weight gain or weight loss has occurred
  • Facial scarring or abnormalities which affect the confidence of the respirator face-seal.
  • Facial surgery has taken place
  • A different model, make or size of mask is being used
  • A change of associated above the neck PPE when worn with the respirator.  (PPE worn together with RPE must be compatible)
  • On initial selection of a respirator
  • Untested respirators already in use
  • When the employers health and safety policy requires it
  • When RPE is used frequently as a primary means of control

Key points:

  • Understand the occasions and situations when Fit testing should be reviewed.
  • A confident respirator face-seal is critical for effective respiratory protection. A successful Fit Test will deliver peace of mind to the wearer and employer
