Who needs to be face fit tested?

Understanding who must undergo RPE fit testing in the workplace

Any worker who is required to wear tight-fitting Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) must undergo a face fit test. This includes full-face masks, half masks, and disposable facepieces (also known as filtering facepieces or FFPs).

Fit testing ensures the RPE forms an effective seal on the wearer’s face, which is crucial for protecting them against airborne hazards such as dust, fumes, vapours, and gases.

Employers have a legal responsibility under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations to ensure that RPE provided to employees is both suitable for the task and fits the wearer properly.

Fit testing should be carried out:

  • Before the employee uses the RPE for the first time.
  • If a different make or model of mask is issued.
  • If the wearer undergoes any significant facial changes (e.g., weight loss/gain, dental work, facial surgery, or scarring).
  • When the employers health and safety policy requires it.
  • A change of associated PPE (above the neck) when worn with the same RPE
  • When RPE is used frequently as a primary or sole means of exposure control.

Key points:

  • Fit testing is required for all users of tight-fitting RPE.
  • Ensures the mask provides effective protection by forming a proper seal.
  • A legal requirement under COSHH Regulations.
  • Must be repeated if the wearer’s facial characteristics change or a different mask is used.
