Safety helmets need to be replaced periodically to ensure continued performance. The shell and harness material can deteriorate over time, reducing the level of protection provided to the wearer.
It is important to understand how often helmets require replacement and how to determine remaining life. Helmet headtops for powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) devices are subject to the same lifespan and must be checked to make sure the helmet is in date.
Helmet lifespan
Each safety helmet has a lifespan. Manufacturers assess how long the helmet can be safely used for before materials may begin to deteriorate. Lifespan varies for helmets made by different manufacturers. JSP safety helmets have a combined shelf and useful life of 10 years. This means a helmet can be stored for up to 5 years in the appropriate storage conditions, then used up to 5 years following, providing the correct inspection and maintenance is carried out.
All JSP helmets have a date of manufacture under the peak. The date wheel shows the month and year of manufacture, which can be used to work out remaining life. Record the date of first use for each helmet. This allows you to keep track of the ‘in use’ lifespan. Even if a helmet is within its five year usage life, it is still important to check the manufacturing date and make sure the overall 10 year life has not been exceeded. Helmets may need to be replaced more frequently if required by local legislation or company policy. Any helmet subjected to impact must be replaced immediately.
Powered air purifying respirator helmets
The same lifespan and replacement requirements apply to safety helmet headtops for powered air purifying respirator (PAPR) devices. PAPR devices certified to European standard EN 12941 can incorporate a safety helmet, acting as a loose-fitting headtop for the respirator and providing additional head protection. It is crucial to check the remaining lifespan of PAPR helmet headtops. As well as changing filters and charging the battery to maintain the respiratory protection system, the helmet needs to be replaced periodically to ensure the wearer is fully protected in the event of an impact.
JSP PAPR systems are designed as modular systems allowing components to be easily replaced.
Regular helmet inspection
Regular inspection is necessary to check the helmet’s shell and harness for signs of damage, cracks or brittleness. Keeping the helmet clean and free from stickers or labels makes it easier to notice defects.
Checking the remaining lifespan should form part of the inspection process for safety helmets and PAPR helmet headtops, ensuring that out of date items are identified and replaced.
Replacing out of date safety helmets is crucial to ensure wearers remain properly protected against workplace hazards. It is vital to know the helmet’s storage and usage life, record the date of first use, and check the manufacturing date shown under the peak to make sure the overall lifespan has not been exceeded. Contact JSP for advice if you are unsure of the life of your safety helmet or PAPR headtop.
