What Does 'Optical Class 1' Mean in Eye Protection?

Understanding Lens Quality Ratings in Safety Eyewear

The term 'optical class' refers to the quality of the lens used in safety eyewear and how it affects vision. It is categorised into three classes: 1, 2, and 3, as defined by European Standard EN 166.

These classes are determined through testing to ensure the lenses are free from visual distortions that could cause discomfort or eye strain.

Optical Class 1: Highest quality lens, suitable for prolonged or all-day wear. Offers clear, undistorted vision and is ideal for regular, long-term use.

Optical Class 2: Acceptable for occasional use, but not recommended for extended periods.

Optical Class 3: Lower lens quality, only suitable for very short-term use. Not advised for regular wear due to potential eye strain.

All JSP safety spectacles, goggles, and applicable face shields are manufactured to Optical Class 1, ensuring maximum clarity and wearer comfort for extended use.

Summary of key points:

  • Optical class measures lens clarity and quality.
  • Class 1 is the highest standard and is safe for continuous wear.
  • Class 3 lenses should only be worn for short durations.
  • All JSP eyewear that applies is Optical Class 1 for safe, comfortable use.
